As soon as the clock strikes midnight on June 1, the rainbow wave takes over. From colourful logos to Pride posts, brands jump on the bandwagon with flashy campaigns and token gestures.
While raising awareness is important, let's be real: a lot of companies only do it to check a box.
Silence is violence, but performative actions arenāt much better. If you stand for nothing, what will you fall for? (Thank you, Hamilton, for that reference).
You want to change your logo to celebrate Pride? Ok great! But then what?
Have you taken purposeful action to make your business or organization inclusive and safe for folks from the 2SLGBTQIA+ community?
You want to share a post honouring National Indigenous Peoples Day? Thatās wonderful. But then what?
Have you done anything to support the Indigenous community before this? Have you taken actionable steps towards Truth and Reconciliation?
You want to celebrate International Womenās Day? YAY! But then what?
Have you put policies in place to combat pay inequity? Is your senior leadership team representative of your whole company?
Itās not about doing something one day a year. Itās about what you do behind the scenes the other 364 days thatās creating opportunities for diversity, equity and inclusion (without the public service announcement to your 100k followers) that really matters.
Itās about authenticity.
Here are some things to consider if you want to incorporate an important cause into your marketing without being performative and tokenizing:
1. Walk the Talk
Before launching any cause-related campaign, look inward. Is your company truly supportive of the cause? Do you have policies and practices that reflect this? Ensure your internal actions align with your external messaging.
2. Support Causes Year-Round
Donāt just show up when itās trendy. Commit to supporting causes throughout the year. Partner with relevant organizations, donate a portion of your profits, and get involved in community events regularly.
3. Amplify Authentic Voices
Feature voices from the communities youāre supportingānot just during designated months or days, but always. Share their stories, highlight their achievements, and let them lead the conversation.
4. Measure Your Impact
Set clear goals for your cause marketing efforts and measure their impact. Are you reaching the community effectively? Are your efforts making a difference? Use this data to continuously improve your approach.
5. Avoid Performative Activism
Be transparent about your motives. If youāre supporting a cause just for publicity, it will show. Your commitment should be sincere and reflected in every aspect of your brand.
And weāre not just talking the talk. Belonging, inclusivity, and diversity are core values at Growclass. From day one weāve focused on helping underrepresented folks build lucrative careers and businesses by teaching modern marketing skills, connecting them to a community of experts, and helping them gain confidence. While also donating proceeds to various non-profit organizations and providing scholarships to those in need.
Because marketing isnāt about hopping on a bandwagon; itās about making a real difference and showing genuine support. So, let's ditch the performative acts and start creating campaigns that truly uplift and empower the communities you care about.
